"NO FLY" list becomes "Please fly" list! Times Square suspect boards plane.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/05/05/security-slip-let-nyc-bomb-suspect-plane/

Faisal Shahzad had boarded a jetliner bound for the United Arab Emirates Monday night before federal authorities pulled him back. Although under surveillance since midafternoon, he had managed to elude investigators and head to the airport.

The night's events, gradually coming to light, underscored the flaws in the nation's aviation security system, which despite its technologies, lists and information sharing, often comes down to someone making a right call.

What is going on? Why isn't the Dept of Homeland Security doing its job?

  • He was on the list - the airline screwed up

"When updates are made to the no-fly list, notifications are sent to airlines instructing them to check the updated list. Until now, airlines have been required to check for updated lists every 24 hours. Effective immediately, airlines will have to check the updated list within two hours of being notified of changes, according to a U.S. homeland security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the policy change. The official says airlines could be fined if they don't comply."

  • Shahzad was able to purchase a last minute ticket from Emirates airlines and board a Dubai-bound airplane at John F. Kennedy International Airport late Monday night.

But Emirates airlines apparently failed to check the latest version of the terror watch list that included Shahzad's name.

Customs and Border Protection officials saw Shahzad's name on the list of passengers 30 minutes before the flight was to take off. They pulled Shahzad off the plane and arrested him before the plane left the gate.

  • Funny, thats how I feel about the oil spill. Stuff happens and this was a very unusual (in fact had never happened before) thing. People are not considering any of that because something did happen.
Had this guy really succeeded in blowing things up I think you would have a totally different attitude. At least get real....

The sheer fact that he was able to board the plane was very alarming. He should haven't even been able to step foot in the airport! My dad travels a lot for business and some how landed himself on the "no fly list" we have no idea why. But every time we go on vacation, it takes like 45 minutes for him to just be cleared to fly! He's pretty pissed about this whole thing since he is a good, upstanding citizen and gets shit for getting on a plane, but then the guy who tried to blow up Time Square has no problem!
