If your house is equipped with a septic tank...

What can I use occassionally instead of RID-X every month for the maintainance?
I'm wondering because once in awhile we run a little short on cash and buying RID-X is one of the things that usually gets put on the back burner.
Would pouring bleach down the toilets work?

  • Rid-X is not necessary for a septic tank. The advertising got to you. We were on septic here in this house until about 4 yrs ago when they put in sewer. The tank had not been pumped out before we moved that was about 6 yrs on our septic tank with no pumping with our family and I think they had it pumped out about 5 yrs before we bought the house so that's 11 yrs with no problems and no Rid-X.
Big things....Do NOT flush tampons down the toilet. It is best to NOT have a garbage disposal on a septic system. Use septic use approved toilet paper as it breaks down fastest and won't fill the system like those nice soft fluffy papers (We use Scott brand toilet paper and still do because it doesn't clog the toilet).
As for Rid-X - they've actually done studies where it does more harm than good because the Old established bacteria end up "fighting" with the new bacteria and can eat each other making a low bacteria system

  • No, bleach will just kill off the bacteria and stuff. The rid-x adds extra bacteria to help break things down... sort of like eating yogurt to help your digestive track? Bad example, I know...but it's the same theory.

You could probably get away with doing it only every other month if you need to. If anything else, check the bottle/box and see if they have a website, they probably have something like a frequently asked question area that would probably answer everything.

  • We have had our septic tank for over 7 years and have never used anything. We have never had a issue and to date it does not need to be pumped out. The occasional pumping is the only "maintenance" a septic tank needs unless there is a problem with your lines or something. The tank should have all the bacteria it needs unless it is a new one.
