How much are newborns supposed to sleep?

My 5 day old little girl is only awake when she wants to eat, then she falls asleep while eating. I feel like she spends all day sleeping either in her swing or my arms, and I don't know if that's good or not...

  • the longest a newborn should stay awake is about two hours, but it takes a few weeks for them to do that. she will stay awake longer as she get's older.

  • They do... and they are all different. 2 of my 3 were never sleepers. It made for some long days and nights. My middle child nursed and slept for the first few weeks. It was nice. :-)

  • As long as she's not jaundiced, you're fine.

  • They are supposed to sleep as much as they want, but if you're nursing, be sure to wake every two hours or so to get your supply going well. I let mine sleep most hours out of the day, but not more than two straight hours so they nurse frequently enough.
