Tricks to eating out with a VERY energetic 13 month old?

We go out to eat about 2-3x a month and she is getting worse each time we go. We try to make sure she is hungry for the meal and that she has napped. We also usually bring a small toy and a book but she just goes nuts on us! She tries to run to each table and say hi to everyone. She wants to talk to every person in the restaurant and she will climb in anyone's lap if we were to let her.

Do you know any good tricks to get her to behave? We want to keep taking her with us but it is getting so hard that we can't just relax and have a good time.

  • Do you not strap her in a highchair or booster seat?

  • Definitley make sure shes strapped in a highchair, lol. Then, give her a small bag of goodies you've brought from home filled with crayons, drawing paper, small and interesting toys that she doesnt get to play with at home...bring a different variety of things and pull them out as she becomes bored with one item. My son was crazy when I took him to restaraunts when he was younger so I learned those tricks, lol. As he got older I played diersion games with him at the restaraunt. His favorite was "find all the circles" you'd be amazed at how observant they can be AND how many circles there are in a restaurant, lol. Of course..that won't work till shes liek 3 but you might as well start planning ahead! LOL Good Luck!

  • A few things -- dont go to anyplace too fancy its not fair to her or you-- Apple bees is a personal favorite

try this send DH in to get the table and place your orders while you are running around with dd outside (walk around if their is a restaurant with a near by play area even better if not just wonder thru retail stores and stuff) have DH give you a buzz when the order has been placed-- now go sit down with dd strapped in-- explain your expectation to her (each and every time you go out) but your expectation should be for her to sit while you all eat dinner no longer then 30 minutes-- after you eat you should be outta there --she should not be expected to wait more then a few minutes before a change in venue

get portable desert like drive up baskin robins or something it is not fair to ask more then that of a 13 month old

if you are jonesin for some time out long dinner and stuff get a sitter

  • OP here- She hasn't become interested in drawing yet, she tries to eat the crayons. We do strap her in but she screams at the top of her lungs which disrupts everyone around us. She is also very strong and has figured out how to undo the high chair straps..

Thank you for all the advice =)
