What is the correct word to use--African American or Black?

I am white. I have often wondered which word is more appropriate/respectful?

Do you have a preference and why?

  • i think the "politically correct" word is african american, but the politically word for white is also caucasian and nobody really says that so i just say black and white.

  • Either one is fine. If they can say N then I don't see what's disrespectful about a white person saying black.

  • I am white, I feel funny saying black in front of another black person. Not sure why, but I feel really stupid saying African American too.

I guess its just calling out the color that bothers me, mainly I think b/c its such a touchy subject for some people and I dont like offending people.

YES they are Americans...but when you are trying to describe someone...."hey I saw that tall black man in the blue shirt yesterday" or whatever. You need more words than just "hey I saw that American yesterday. LOL

  • I say black, just because I disagree with the term African American, unless they or their parents actually were born in Africa (and one of the two people I've met who fit that description is white).
