Educational attainment is a very critical factor in accounting for lifetime fertility differentials. Women with 1 or more years of college have sharply lower lifetime fertility than less educated women, regardless of race or Hispanic origin. Women with college degrees can be expected to complete their childbearing with 1.6-2.0 children each; 1.7 for non-Hispanic white, 1.6 for non-Hispanic black, and 2.0 for Hispanic women. For women with less education the total expected number of children are: 3.2 children for those with 0-8 years of education; 2.3 children for those with 9-11 years of education and 2.7 for high school graduates.

  • I know plenty with more than one as well. I know 4 that are single moms and have one child. Why? Because they got a divorce after having a child and I guess seeing who they were married to was not a safe father figure. so when they left, so did the chance at having more kids right away.

  • Is this a serious question? If so I think you are seriously mistaken. But to answer your question..

    1. They choose to only have 1 child
    2. Daycare is costly and they consider these things
    3. Not all working mothers have only 1 child

  • Until June of last year I was a working mom with 3 kids. My mother was a working mom with 3 kids. My aunt was a working mother with 4 kids. A lot of working mothers have more than 1 kid.

  • Who knows? I am a SAHM and only have one. There could be many reasons for it. We could not get pregnant for a while but now my fertility has come back not sure I want to go through pregnancy and the infants stages again.

  • DO they? DO they all only have one child? On what planet? What a silly question. I know many working women who have 2 or 3 or 4 kids. But who cares???? WHy do you ask?

  • Why do SAHMs only have one child? I don't think the decision to have one child has much to do with whether the mom works or not. I'm a working mom with two children. I know several SAHMs with only one child. One of them told me she chose to only have one child so she could devote all of her time and energy to him. One working mom I know only has one child because her husband died when their son was 6 weeks old and she didn't remarry until her son was grown.
