I've literally never bought baby food. WIC bought me several boxes of baby cereal way back when my son was little but those have been in the pantry for a year and a half now.
I just give them the same food we're eating. My son liked his early foods pureed and spoon fed. My daughter, who is just starting on food, prefers soft chunks she can feed herself.
My son started on avocados, tomatoes (his choice, definitely not mine), homemade bread, and sweet potatoes.
My daughter has tried overcooked rice, pasta, and broccoli.
Neither has yet to meet a food they didn't like. :-)

  • My son is 8 months old and quite independent. He hates being spoon fed, and insists on feeding himself. I ensure anything I give him is gum-mashable or dissolves quickly. I test by smashing it with the roof of my mouth and tongue. If I can do it, he can probably, too. Also, I cut everything up in tiny pieces so that if he were to swallow it whole, it won't get stuck.

I boil carrots, apples, pears, sweet potato, and squash until mashable. I give him fresh bananas, avocado, and mango. He loves cheerios. I try to give my son different textures to try, and so far so good!

  • We never bought baby food, just mashed up whatever fruits and vegetables we were eating. At nine months, great foods are: avocado, sweet potatoes, blueberries, zucchini, apples, peaches, bananas, peas, carrots, again, whatever you are eating.

  • No baby food here. My 8 month old for two weeks has eaten apple, banana, avocado, butternut squash, pear, zucchini, cucumber, peas, potato, blueberries, crnberries, corn muffin, kidney beans, black beans, sweet potato, carrot, green bean, a bit of bread... basically samples of what i am eating. For mushy things I dip the spoonand let her feed herself.

  • My 9 month old daughter eats baby food but rarely, she will eat almost whatever we are eating just small bites. She loves mashed pototoes and macaronie.
