Anyone familiar with Silly Bandz? What's all the hype?

I just became aware of the Silly Bandz craze when I heard on the radio this morning that schools are beginning to ban the bracelettes. Apparently, Silly Bandz are sold out everyhwere and kids are stealing them and trading them in school creating "distractions" according to some local schools.

  • LOL, I just got an email from my DS's teacher to the whole class that she is banning these things from the classroom. She said that kids are distracted by trading during class and that the one's with a bunch of them are making fun of the kids that have none. They are just trying to get through the last few weeks of school. I don't blame her for banning them, they do seem like they would be a distraction.

  • yeah, I've heard of them. They are stupid, cheaply made little bracelets that are similar to the jelly bracelets that were popular when I was young, only they are shaped into animals, etc. We had been unable to find them, but dd bought them at her school store. I hate them

  • Oh good God...they have become such a "thing" that my school (grades 4, 5, and 6) have completely BANNED them, and the 7th and 8th grade school is considering banning them! They are so stupid, and such a distraction...but then I ask myself, why can't I come up with some stupid little thing that will net me a few million?! LOL :o)

  • My kids love them. They are fun shaped rubber bands. They trade them and wear them. They are cute and very inexpensive. I think I spent about $25 and got over 120 bands.

  • Wow... I never heard of them! It's amazing what peer pressure will do. Someone makes millions off fitting kids into cookie-cutter molds. And then people try to convince me my kids "need" the social interaction they'll get at public school. No thanks!

  • Thats the new "in" thing at my sons school too. I've been buying them for him. He trades them with the other kids. I'm sure it won't be long before his school bans them if its causing a distraction. I'm not sure if it is or not at his school..he says they trade them at recess which I don't think is really a big deal. I remember wearing plastic colored bracelets when we were 10 and 11, we traded them , we had them up to our elbows, lol. It was something fun to do, never distracted me from class though. Oh well.

  • My niece and her friend (both 16) came over wearing them and showing them to me. I think they are sooo cute but yes a little nuts on how they are having to be banned because of the distraction! I can only imagine what the hype will be when my son is in school!
