Gifts for new baby & mom?

My cousin is having her 1st child. She's just been put on bedrest (she's 30ish wks) and they don't even know how they are going to pay the bills.

Her baby shower is coming up on the 30th & I'm sending her some things. What are some necessary items that many people overlook when giving gifts? She's going to need as much of that as she can esp since she is no longer going to be able to afford the basic necessities for herself. I was thinking some things I could possibly do- some huge maxi pads (you know you didn't prepare in advance for that 5 week long period afterward!), breast pads, teething stuff, mylicon/gas & fever relief stuff, diapers & wipes (of course!)... What else would she need but not think to get or others not get her?

What is something I can get HER? Maybe a new mom guide/book? She doesn't use pampery stuff (bath wash/lotion/etc). Ideas? She's had such a HORRIBLE pregnancy she deserves something for her

  • Food in the freezer, a breastfeeding book, a baby sling/wrap, stamps (for thank you cards), her favorite dessert.

  • I absolutely wish I could do the food, but unfortunately she's out of state. :( I'm sending stuff with my mom when she goes down for her baby shower. I'll probably end up getting her a sling for sure.

  • Diapers, Diapers, Diapers!!! and gift certificates to baby stores like BabiesRus. So they can buy clothes, formula, Diapers, baby food and other things they need. Also an infant Car seat and Stroller combo that holds the carseat like a Chicco Cortina Travel System. Many Hospitals will not discharge the infant to go home without a carseat. Also buy Blankets, a Pack & Play, Swing, & Baby monitor. A Basket filled with baby items like Johnsons Baby Wash, Baby Lotion, Desitin or Balmex, Baby shampoo. A Baby thermometer.

  • You could get them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant that does take out near them...so they can have a nice meal on a bad day when they wouldn't otherwise splurge on. Gripe Water, burp clothes, diaper champ (or diaper genie)

  • If she really wants to save money.... prefold cloth diapers and 3 or 4 covers are incredibly economical.
