When to bake cake?

I am making a 12 in square cake for a baby shower on Saturday. Can I bake it today and dirty ice it and put it in the fridge? Should I put the fondant on it tomorrow and decorate it or should I wait to out the fondant on it Saturday and decorate it then? Is it best to decorate t all tomorrow so it is done? If so how would I store the decorated fondant cake (it is gonna have gumpaste butterflies on it) in the fridge.

  • Bake today. Freeze. Friday afternoon take it out, crumb coat it while frozen, let it thaw, put the fondant on, and decorate on Saturday. Or bake, ice, and fondant all on Friday night. I wouldn't do it the way you said, too much chance to get stale and gross.
