Help! DS is CRIBBING!!

Ok, so in the horse-world, that's a problem. The horses actually bite down on the wood in their stalls and grind their teeth through the wood.

So here's the thing, DS has started to literally chew off pieces of the edges of his crib! What can I do to stop this?

DH suggested tobasco, but I don't want to burn him!

  • how old is he? is he teething? i would give him something to soothe his gums/teeth if that is the problem....other than that, i have not heard of anything like this.

  • He's 13mo, and he has the 8 in front, but cutting the first 4 molars all at once. He has never had problems with his teething, never been fussy, etc. The only thing he has when he's teething is an overwhelming number of poopy diapers. So I imagine it's becoming more of a habit than anything... I just didn't know if there was some bad-tasting something I could put on it... he doesn't mind sour or tart things...

  • Yea I had one that did this and one that literally rocked the crib apart. My solution has been when they start to destroy the crib move them to a big boy bed.

  • Move him to a big boy bed. And purchase teething rings.

  • Don't leave him alone to find his own amusement, if you don't like the way he amuses himself.

When horses are doing it, it's the same reason: boredom and frustration with being coralled alone. Horses (and humans) are social animals and the exhibit symptoms of stress and anxiety when they are sequestered from others.

If every time he wakes up you pick him up out of his crib before he's even standing up, he will have no opportunity to continue and the behaviour will fade.

  • There are special guards for the top of the rails. They're plastic. You can find them at walmart and babies r us.
