do you think its okay to give 5 yr old a set of water guns as a bday gift or should i have asked his mother first?

I am thinking its okay but i'm just wondering if any of you think i really should've asked because its a "gun."

  • in the future either ask the parent OR think back to when you've been around the kid, did they have toys like that?

I know a LOT of parents with rules about what comes into their homes. No glitter, no stickers, no markers, no gum, etc etc

  • I would have asked. I don't know to many people who allow their young kids to have guns... I know we don't

  • I would think that it's fine, and I wouldn't mind, but I know parents who would. Maybe you should ask just to be on the safe side.

  • Water guns are awesome! I think it's a great idea! If you are worried about the parent though, an email or phone call wont hurt because there are some parents who don't allow any type of toy guns in their home.

  • I guess it depends on the kid and the mother. Personally, my dad and their stepdad own real guns, and so my kids have been taught very clearly the difference between real and fake guns, and understand they can play with fake ones, like water guns, and not real ones. So, I wouldn't mind if someone bought them an obviously fake water gun. But I have a friend that would pitch a royal fit if you bought her kids the most garishly colored fake gun in the world, b/c it's a "gun". If you think she might be bothered, then I'd ask her. But if you don't think she'd mind, then go for it.

  • I would ask for a gift like that, alot of parents are very strict on any type of gun play.

  • at five i know my SS had no issues understanding that a water gun is not a real gun. they have those nerf guns too. both my SS and my nephew has had both water guns and nerf guns since probably 3 years old or younger. i honestly wouldnt have even given it a second thought giving a water gun as a gift. i guess this was an issue i was oblivious too. lol

  • I dont get why parents wont allow any kind of guns...even water guns. REALLY? Why?

Just dont see a reason behind it..please enlighten me. Not judging I just dont understand how a water gun could promote violence.

  • I wouldn't think anything of it. We gave our 2 and 3 year old boys water guns in their Easter baskets.
