My 5 year old is afraid to do things he has been doing for years-is this normal?

Ds is 5 and the last couple of months he has been afraid to do things, things he has done for years. At the park, he was scared to climb things he has climbed since he was 2. We went to a waterpark over the weekend, and he insisted on a life jacket even in the 4 inch deep baby pool. He also wouldn't go on the small waterslides without us there to catch him, even though he's done it so many times before, he can stand in the water, and was wearing a life jacket.

Is this a normal developmental stage? Like now that he is older, he understands more about getting hurt? Anyone else's kid do this?

  • Maybe he didn't understand fear before and does now. Has he seen anyone get hurt doing those things? Let him work his confidence back up and he should be fine.

  • Yeah maybe he's getting older and understanding. that's a good thing. When they're little, they do whatever. Now he's able to know WHY to be careful- it hurts if you fall.
