Do you know the difference between Katrina and The Gulf Coast Oil Spill?

Katrina demolished New Orleans because of Levy failure. The Levy's are supposed to be maintained by a group of LOCALS in New Orleans called the Levy Board. They are HUGELY corrupt and did NOT maintain. The MAYOR of NO sent the people to a shelter IN NO. Please tell me what sense THAT makes. And the Governor of LA did NOT call on federal help until it was too late. ALSO the PEOPLE of NO KNOW that there is NO FOOD and NO WATER at a hurricane shelter. Somehow...despite ALL of that, the Katrina disaster was GWB's fault.

The Oil platforms in the gulf are regulated by.....the FEDERAL govt. BP was about to win a safety award from THIS administration. THIS problem is THEIR problem and they are doing nothing!

Can you please tell my why this admin is being given a free pass here? You want BP to pay?? ME TOO. But to think that THEY are going to worry about the gulf over their profit is insane!

  • Mommom, the Federal government was supposed to inspect those rigs MONTHLY. THEY DIDN'T. That is a problem.

As for Katrina, Nagin had a evacuation plan in place using the public school buses to evacuate people. He didn't use the plan, and those buses sat there as New Orleans flooded. That was HIS fault.

The levys were scheduled to be rebuilt by the Federal government, unfortunately Katrina hit before the work began. The work was delayed because many LA politicians didn't feel they needed rebuilding.

In Katrina, the failure went from Mayor, to Governor, to the Feds.

In BP's oil spill, the Feds failed to properly inspect the rig. This falls of BP and the Federal government.

  • I completely agree, OP.

The catastrophic result of bad decision making on behalf of the officials in charge in NO and LA should be owned and the responsibility of those individuals, not the federal government first.

  • Momof, the feds are supposed to inspect those drilling rigs monthly, and they skipped FOUR inspections in the last year.  That is ONE THIRD of the inspections for a year!  Maybe if they had been done, this catastrophe could have been prevented.

  • Actually the Corp of Engineers is responsible for the Levy there, the Levy Board oversees and requests funds. Both are man made catastrophes. The only difference is katrina, an act of nature, was the catalyst for the first man made catastrophe that was inevitable. This oil situation should have also been foreseen and planned for. The government both state and federal need to stop playing defense with oversight and start playing offense.

  • But we can't have it both ways. We can't scream drill baby drill and then say oversight but don't oversight because you are communist. I wish I was one of the blind so I could ignore all of the issues and then just choose the issues in a vaccum.

  • there will be little outrage over this one. Obama is charismatic and Bush was not. The only thing people care about anymore is how people make them feel.

  • Let's see, the Bush Admin didn't step in fast enough after the levies gave way following Katrina because they are racist and didn't care what happened to the minorities in that area. The Obama administration stepped in...ahh...wait...no, let me back up...they didn't step in because.... ahhh... well crap.

Ok, let me start over. The difference between the two? The media and the loudest of louds were looking for anything and everything to bang Bush over the head with in the post-Katrina days. Today the media and the loudest of louds are looking for every possible way to cover OB's butt and deny he could be anything less than Heaven-sent.

I'm outraged that there is no OUTRAGE. Where are the Feds? Where are the libs on this board that rip into Bush and Friends years later? Where are the Hollywood types? Where is Sharpton? I heard one report that said *IF* the Feds had moved quicker the spill could have been contained. Nice.
