  • BH can be uncomfortable, but they are not supposed to hurt. If you are having painful contractions, time them, and call your doctor if you're having more than you should. How far along are you?

  • When they say they don't hurt, I think they mean in comparison to real true labor contractions. I only had them with my last pregnancy (#3) and the tightening can get pretty uncomfortable. But compared to real contractions..shooo....it's a breeze!

  • There is no "should" or "shouldn't."

  • I went into preterm labor a month ago, so without going into the whole story, here's what I learned:

Up to 4 per hour is totally normal, even with discomfort.
5 or more per hour over the course of two or more hours is concerning.
Keep a piece of paper or notepad by your bed and jot the time, duration and whether or not they hurt.  Lay down on your left side and keep counting them.  If they aren't alleviated by the change in activity after two hours, call your OB.

This may be your body's way of telling you to slow down and take it easier.  Listen up!
