5 month old not pooping?

My daughter has been a 1-2 times a day pooper since she was 2 months old but the last 8 days has only pooped 1 time, and that was thanks to a glycerine suppository given by her doc on day 5. and a lot of poop came out, and it was thicker than usual, so i know she was plugged up. she's breastfed, no solids. any ideas on what the deal is or how to help her?

  • EBF babies can safely go more then two weeks without a bowel movement, as long as it's not dry, hard, or pellet like. Thicker stool doesn't count as constipation. IMO, keep nursing on demand, and enjoy the lack of messy changes. Suppositories are NOT necessary unless baby is passing dry hard pebbles. :)

  • breastfed babies can go a long time without pooping. my nephew just went 2 weeks. his doctor was not worried.

  • if she is truly plugged up it will come out like golf-balls.

it is normal for a breast fed baby to go up to a week with no poop.

just keep an eye on her. as long as she isn't acting uncomfortable then she is fine.

  • Copious is NOT plugged up or constipated. It not unusual for bf babies to go a while between poops, some go 10 days!. We call it the poo bomb. If she is not in pain leave well enough alone. Poop patterns change, its normal.

Constipation is hard poop that is hard to pass and requires straining and pushing and is painful.
