How long does it take a 3 year old to adapt to a new place?

We've only been here 4 days, but my 3 year old DS keeps saying "Let's go home, I wanna go home!"

Any idea, in general, how long it takes them to adapt?

  • It took a couple of weeks when my friend moved houses. He just stopped asking one day. I don't really have any advice or anything, but hopefully he'll "get it" soon. Good luck!

  • My son was 4 when we moved from a small town in NC to DC. He missed his grandparents mostly, but we tried to make things fun for him...and just kept him busy. After the newness wears off, that will be home. Just takes a bit.

  • My 3 year old adjusted right away but she still mentions our old house and her friends there even though we lived her for 3 months. Every kid is different so it might take a while to settle in. You can help him feel comfortable by letting him help decorate and unpack or getting him something special for the new house, even if it something practical like new sheets or a new lamp or something. Good luck.

  • We've been in our new house since January, and my daughter still asks me occasionally if we can go home. I think every child is different.

  • My son took about two days. But, we didn't move far from our old house to our new house, we were able to come see the new house a few times before we actually moved, and we talked about moving into the new house constantly before we moved. I think it made a huge difference.

Sometimes he will mention the old house, but it's rare.

  • It depends on the child. Some are ok right away while others can take a week to months to adjust.
