Public high school graduation at a church?

This is happening at a school in my state. Do you feel it's ok? Wrong? Would it be ok if it were a mosque?

Please note it's been established that the church isn't the cheapest option and the school was given a year's notice that if they tried to hold graduation there again a lawsuit would be forthcoming. Would those facts change your opinion?

  • My son is having his celebration at the catholic school.

As long as there is no mass what is the diffrence, it does not bother me.

  • Good decision by the judge!

Only parochial schools should hold graduations in a church.

  • Are there any non-christians that are ok with this? It seems the ones that are alright with it are mainly judeo-christian. I'm wondering if this is because it's their religion (or one they're very familiar with) being represented. Would you feel as comfortable it it were a mosque or a location dedicated to wiccan worship? This is an honest question. Just trying to gauge where people are coming from on this.

  • It's a building, they're not holding church services or preaching a message. Stupid lawsuits, stupid arguments, waste of the courts time that could be used for something more important...

And I know "separation of church and state"... which is not in the constitution anywhere... so not a valid argument but no one in the judicial system can figure that one out..

  • I guess you don't have a right to a fair trial or a right to privacy, since those aren't in the constitution either.

  • And what's wrong with the school's auditorium or football field? Unless there were some serious constraints of options in which to hold the graduation the judge is right that it goes against the first ammendment for the PUBLIC school to hold graduation at a church as it is seen as endorsing a religion. (Same would apply for a mosque or sanctuary or any other building dedicated to a religion).

  • A public high school graduation should be held in a public forum, not ANY religious building. This is telling others of different beliefs that Our Religion is better than yours... that is wrong....

  • The public schools around here have their graduations in churches - the sanctuaries are bigger and there's more seating option than in a gym, plus it just looks nicer. One school is so big they hold graduation in the Christian college's fancy-schmancy auditorium. I see nothing wrong with it. They don't pray or anything, it's just a comfortable place to hold a ceremony.
