Is okay to buy a guinea pig from a petstore such as Petsmart?

A couple of friends suggested that I find a breeder in my area. I would like to go to the Petsmart.

  • Most people believe pets from pet stores are better or healthier, this is not always the case. In most cases it's safer and better to buy from a breeder that actually "Specializes" in a particular animal than going to just some average run of the mill pet store who has a shitload of different animals.

  • Petsmart is great BUT their piggies aren't as tame...check around first

  • Why don't you try your local animal shelter? Ours almost always has piggies-most are a year or two old too. A lot of times they even come with their cages and at our shelter they only charge $10 a piggie-including the cage. A second place would be craigslist-it is great to get a piggie that has been handled and is a little older and it needs a home. The ones from petsmart are not bad-but they are very young and not used to being handled and can be very jumpy-they need socialization if you do get one.

  • I've gotten guinea pigs from petstores before, and they have been perfectly fine. I don;t know of anyone who breeds guinea pigs in my area, but it would be neat to see. The animal shelter also always seems to ahve guinea pigs. Look around and find a guinea pig that you like.
