why does his breath stink?

I brush my one year olds teeth regularly so can it be because he is getting over a cold? His nose was really congested so he been breathing through his mouth.. Can this cause bad breath? He has never had this problem before so I'm kinda concerned

  • it could be, how much juice and milk does he drink? even if you brush his teeth regularly, if he's toting a sippy cup, it's very possible that those fluids are pooling in his mouth and just creating more and more bacteria. keep up with the brushing, if there are teeth, make sure to floss also. walmart has those little floss pics if you don't want your hand in his mouth.

  • 2 thoughts. He could have a sinus infection and maybe you are smelling that instead. My 5 yr old periodically has super smelly sneezes. When that happens I use Simply Saline to flush out her nose.
The second thought is both my 5 & 3 yr olds sometimes get horrid breath when they eat certain foods. Even after brushing their teeth because it is like coming from their belly.

  • Does he eat a lot of cheddar cheese? My daughter loves cheddar and every time she eats it, no matter how much brushing is done after, she has stinky breath for several hours.

  • These(the above responses) are some of the suggestions I was going to make. I really don't have much more to add except that when I have little situations like this which bring me some concern, I usually check webmd.com that site is pretty resourceful and don't forget about Google. Good luck to you, I know how annoying bad breath from a little one can be, my youngest son went thru a spell from like 18 months til he was almost three, he got most of his kisses from mommy on his cheek during that time. LOL Have a nice weekend.
