What Can I use instead of Butter or Margerine?

I want to make scalloped potatoes and the recipie calls for butter. I don't have the butter or margerine. What can I use?

  • maybe vegtable oil

  • if your recipe is one that calls for milk you can omit the butter altogether. also, you can leave it out if you are using a box. I do out of personal preference.

  • I've never made them without butter. Maybe a little olive oil or plain yogurt or mayo or sour cream? I don't know, just ideas.

  • if you have heavy cream you can shake it until you make butter :)
