my son hurt his foot at open gym, not sure if i should take him to the doc or not :\

i took my son to open gym at a gymnastics place nearby. within 5 minutes of being there he jumps in the foam pit and lands wrong on his foot and starts crying. but he was fine after that, and continued to play. now im noticing that he's limping on that same foot. should i take him to the doc? or wait and see if it gets better?

  • Put ice on it for about 20 min (wrap the ice pack or pack of frozen veggies in a towel first). Wrap it if you have an ace bandage but not tight. Watch for swelling or discoloration. If it's not better tomorrow then call the dr and see if they think he should come in

  • If he's at an age where he wouldn't stay off it in case of a bad sprain or strain, the doc will cast it. Rule of thumb is if he's willing to walk on it now,its probably not that bad,but if he starts refusing to walk, take him in for an xray. Do the ice for the 1st 24 hrs, then heat later on. Motrin will take the edge off the discomfort.

  • Try to get him to stay off it for a little while, it may have been something minor that is being worsened by his continued walking/playing. Some things also don't seem to hurt right away with toddlers. My DD dislocated her shoulder when she was 2, she didn't really complain much at first but as time went on she started saying her arm and shoulder hurt and wouldn't use her arm at all by the end of the night.
