Should I start feeding my baby formula on a spoon?

He is almost 4 months and I want to get him started on the technique of spoon feeding so it's not so different for him when we start rice cereal. We aren't starting cereal until 4 months. Did anyone do this? Is it a good or bad idea? Or totally useless?

  • the formula is too thin so i wouldn't think it'd be a good idea. Just go on ahead and start with the rice cereal just make it a little thinner the first few times.

  • No. If he's not ready, you're only going to have a mess. No need to practice ahead of time- he'll learn with the cereal. It is a muscle issue, not a learning one. You have to wait until his reflex and muscles work together so that he'll actually be able to quit thrusting his tongue... otherwise the food just gets pushed out. :-)

Take your time, mama... he has his whole life ahead of him.

  • Just wait for the rice,,, BTW most docs now say to wait until 6 months to start rice,, My brother just had a baby your age,, and he is a doc,, I had no idea,, but you need to know how much he is taking in etc,, and just be patient mamma,,they grow up fast enough anyway!

  • It is recommended not to start solids until at least 6 months of age. No need to hurry it along. He is getting all he needs from formula. :)

  • You don't need to do rice. It tastes bad and they can't digest it. Avocadoor sweet potato is better to start. And 6 months is a beeter age. Yo don't need to teach babies to use a spoon. When developmentally ready and their tongue thrust reflex is gone, they will open their mouths.

  • i started my son on rice cereal and fruit at 4 & hlf months per the DR's order. i used to pour some formula in a pan, and pour some stage 1 fruit in the pan, and heat it up and then mix it with the cereal. he wasnt used to it at first so it took some getting used too, and some choo choo train noises, air plain noises, lots of smiling and clapping to make it fun and before i knew it, he LOVED his cereal and fruit. and he has no food allergies. hes 13 months now.
i dont really think giving him formula on a spoon will do anything. he should be fine when you start, just like i said make sure you heat the formula and fruit up so that it tastes good, and make it a happy fun thing!

  • baby needs the comfort of gaining sustinance from a nipple, whether it be real or artificial. don't take that away from them. try waiting until 6 months, longer if they can't sit unassisted, and mash up an avocado or sweet potato.
