Why are for profit institutions, such as Kaplan able to profit from Federal Student aid?

Why is this? So many ignorant people are getting sucked into these schools and end up in so much debt, and with a "degree" that no reputable company/ business will accept?

  • The reason is that they have the money to advertise nationwide. There are many state universities and colleges that offer online classes/degrees that are the same cost (or just slightly higher) than as the in class tuition. However, they don't have the money to advertise nationwide so they are not as well known. If people would actually do a bit of research before hand, they could save about $30,000- $60,000 for a Bachelor's degree.
