  • Growth spurt!!! Don't start on rice...his little body isn't able to process it yet. he is needing more formula or breast milk right now. It will usually only last a week and then he should go back to regular schedule other than eating more at each setting

  • I should elaborate...he doesn't need more formula or BM at each feeding, just more frequently so it will increase his tummy size slightly and then after the spurt, you may notice that he went from 4oz to 5oz each time. So feed more frequently and soon he will go back to a more regular eating schedule

  • I agree -- it is a growth spurt. Just keep feeding hum but don't give him rice yet -- he won't be able to properly digest it unitl he is 4-6 months old.

  • Rice cereal is a choking hazard. It should not be given before 4 months unless prescribed by a doctor. Most doctors will tell you that rice cereal won't lead to longer stretches of sleep any way. 2 hours of stretches of sleep are great for a newborn. Just feed your baby when he's hungry and then both of you get some sleep before the next feeding. Babies wake up hungry during the night. Babies aren't always convenient. You don't give them a choking hazard just so you can get more shut eye. This time will go by so fast.

  • The rice wont make him sleep longer, and shouldnt be given. The ladies are correct. They are also correct that it is a growth spurt. If you are breastfeeding he is trying to tell your body that he is about to start eating more and that it needs to make more milk. Its called cluster feeding. They do it to stimulate more production.

  • Growth spurt! You just need to breastfeed or bottle feed him more. No rice cereal! Baby is too young, it can cause problems. Research has proven it does not help babies sleep longer and has all kids of risks. If your baby is waking to feed every 2 hours at 5 weeks old it is because he needs to and you just need to go with it. Don't expect to see any pattern that baby stays with at this point, baby will keep changing it on you for at least the next year!
