  • Thrush will spread. Antibiotics are needed.

  • You don't need antibiotics you need an antifungal. Actually gentian violet works just as well and you can get that from a vitamin store.

  • Antibiotics are not what is needed since they would do nothing. you need an antifungal, but all 3 of the ones the doc gave us did not work and I finally asked the pharmacist if there was something natural to try when we went to pick up yet our 4th antifungal and he suggested genetian violet. We tried that instead and it worked great, but it does stain everything purple.

  • My daughter's thrush went away on it's own. But I have heard nothing but great things about genetian violet. You do NOT use antibiotics on thrush.

  • Just go for the genetian violet... and get lots of pics of their purple stained faces for the baby book. They are hilarious. :-)

  • Antibiotic bring on or worsen thrush. Thrush is treated by antifungals. It's not serious in that it isn't life threatening, but if it spreads it can get very uncomfortable and can even cause the baby to stop eating due to the tenderness in their mouth. If you are BF it will spread to your breasts. The thrush can even pass through their digestive system and cause a yeast diaper rash.

Do some Google searches. You can treat thrush with grapefruit seed extract or gentian violet. You can find websites that tell you how to use them effectively. (You must dilute grapefruit seed extract and gentian violet should never be used more than once daily and no longer than 7 days).

he or she will more than likely prescribe an oral nystatin which is painted on the inside of the mouth
