What dogs are best for families with small children?

We had a blue heeler and a pit bull, and those did NOT work out. But my DH really wants a dog...I told hime this time it needs to be a lot smaller!

  • I had a german shepard/rottweiler mix who was great with the kids - my dalmation/rottweiler mix was good with my kids but hated strangers, he had that dalmation temperment. As a kid I had a English Sheep dog/ Collie mix and he was the best dog in the world. I currently have a chihuahua/terrier mix and she's great with my 5 year old but my 4 year old is mean to her so she growls at my little one whenever she walks into the room...though yesterday my cousin who has been staying with me the last couple weeks handed her baby to his dad - and my dog doesn't know my cousin's boyfriend - and my dog did not move an inch the whole time he held that baby. She refused to let that baby out of her sight until his mom was holding him again. I thought it was interesting to see how protective my dog is of a baby she's only known a few weeks.

  • I second the golden retriever .... we have had alot of dogs growing up and they were all good with me... but the golden retriever was actually the best and most gentle dog and she honestly didnt seem like a big dog.... she caused less problems and less mess than my tiny ones do now lol

  • It seems like bigger dogs do better with kiddos... I have a Boxer and a German Shepherd and they are both AWESOME with the kids. The shepherd has been with us longer than any of our kids (he's 11) and he's taken each new addition beautifully! The Boxer is just happy to have someone to play with all the time! I have no complaints about either one were the kids are concerned.

  • we have a basset hound and a beagle. they are... absolutely wonderful with children. even with the floppy ears. almost all basset hounds are big fat babies. not huge, but not too small either.
