How do I start a photography business?

I heard on Rachael Ray about members on CafeMom helping someone start a sucessful photography business. I love taking pictures, especially of sports and kids. My kid's friends "steal" them all the time for their facebook profile pics. Their moms want them..which I am glad to give. How do I turn this hobby into a fun job?
Thanks!!!

  • Do some photo shoots of your own family, or extended family, or family friends for free. Once you have some really good pictures, set up a website, get some business cards, and then start offering your services - verbally or on facebook. My SIL did this and now has almost more business than she can handle, and she makes great money! She started out doing photo shoots either in people's homes or in outdoor settings. As she picked up business, she invested in a couple backgrounds, etc. and has a place set up in her basement where she can do a "professional" shoot if that's what the clients want. She's also done the school pictures for one of our local private schools (where her son attends). Luckily, she still does family for free! Good luck!
