Bakery cakes or store bought cakes?

What kind do you buy for your family and why? I just ordered my husband's Birthday cake at a bakery and can't wait to get it! I paid 23 dollars for a two layer red velvet cake that feeds 12 people. Personally I think it's a great deal considering Wal-Mart cakes taste awful, look cheap, and are mainly frosting. For most cakes at the store you almost pay that much, so why not order a better cake?

  • I buy cakes from a local grocery store. They are very tasty and not too expensive.

  • I make my own. They might not look quite as fancy, but they taste good.

  • I usually make my own. Either from a box or from scratch. I like to make zucchini cupcakes for the kids birthdays. With homemade cream cheese yummy.

  • I only make my own cakes. I love to decorate and play around with different themes, and materials like almond paste flowers, objects, etc.

However, I will only spend time and make detailed cakes for family and friends. For bake sales, and people I don;t know (unless I have been asked to make something special), then I make box cakes and "doctor then up" a bit! LOL Shhhhhhhh!!! :o)

  • If I buy a cake I get it at King Soopers( the local grocery chain,) the cakes are pretty good. If I want a completely custom thing, like a Hawaiian shirt for DH's 40th, I use my friend. Usually I just bake them myself.

  • I love Wal-marts "whipped" frosting with their marble cake. Otherwise I like my chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

  • We buy from a lady who makes them out of her home. Great price and they are delicious.

  • I've had both and can't really say which is better in terms of taste, but I do think that going to a baker will usually give you a more customized and skillfully designed cake. But both load it with frosting, though.

  • Our local bakery makes YUUMMMMYYY cakes, but can be expensive.. When we can afford we buy from the bakery. But last year our budget was tight on dd bday so we got a Kroger Cake... It was good, but not as great as our bakery.
