What do you do when one parent isn't setting a good example?

How do you deal with it when your child's father doesn't set a good example, but they live with them. They don't teach the child how to be responsible, clean up, help out, be a good listener, etc. Their father isn't a bad person, he has a good job, but he's just lazy.

  • All you can do is do your best to be the type of parent that teaches your child values. Some people just have kids and think that children will learn on their own. Your dh may be that type of person. As long as you continue doing your job, you will not have to worry about your child not getting the basics.

  • Make the child do it.and when the kids says "Daddy doesn't do this or that".Tell them you are not their daddy's mother but you are theirs.

  • Do your best to be a good example, not to make up for the father's bad one, but because you love your child enough to teach him those things. You cannot control the father's behavior, but you can control yours and the child's behavior. Minimize what dad is doing and maximize good behavior, habits, etc. Maybe dad may even get the hint and make a few changes!!!

  • I'd get on that lazy behavior and let the father know he's not a child either, he should be and WILL be expected to clean up for himself, its different when you are lazy for a night or had to work extra hours but having someone wait on you is ridiculous for an adult. he IS an adult now and should jump on the band wagon, at least for his kids sake at this point
