  • We live east of Cleveland; the pool has to be enclosed by a fence or the pool has to have a removable stair to prevent people from entering when unattended. If you are looking to put one in, you should check with your local building authority, the rules can vary even between neighborhoods around here.

  • We have an in-ground pool, but we have friends and neighbors with above ground pools. In Pennsylvania, you are required to have the walls of the pool be a minimum of 4 feet high--around all sides from the ground up. If your pool is set partially in ground--being on a slope, for example, then you need to either have a fence around the walls of the pool that makes the height at least 4 feet from the ground, a fence around the pool and access ladder or deck itself, or a perimeter fence around your property that encompasses the pool that is at least 4 feet high.

Most newer above ground pools are 54" high, to allow for a water depth of 48", so if you're pool is installed on flat, level ground, then you shouldn't have to install a fence around the pool.

  • Forgot to add that the pool has to be at least 10 feet away from your property line, and if you add a deck, it has to be a minimum of 5 feet off your property line. If your property line is in question, you may have to pay to have an independent property survey completed.

  • Above ground pools don't have to be fenced in, where we live in FL. In ground pools do though.

  • Enclosed 6ft privacy fence with a lock and the ladder on the pool has to come out. Or there can be a deck on part of the pool with a fence on the rest of the pool with a locking gate to limit access to the pool. Check with your CITY for rules, they vary by city.

  • Our pool can't be closer than 5 feet to the property line or the house. The yard or pool area has to be completely fenced (minimum 5 feet high) and the gate needs a latch.
