  • My oldest was three and a half when he started to write his first name. My second child didn't write his name until he was 5 and a month away from starting Kindergarten! He probably could've done it before then, but he wanted to be able to do it perfectly and got frusterated easily.

  • My son was 2. He has a four letter name so it wasn't extremely difficult. The easiest trick is to teach them how to draw the letters in steps. For a d for instance have them draw a straight vertical line first then tell them to draw a circle at the bottom and point to the left side. It makes it so much easier. Also laminated place mats with the ABC's written on them help. Just give them a dry erase marker and have them trace the letters as they eat breakfast or whatever. They pick it up really quickly!

  • My older 3 kids were about 4-4 1/2. My youngest went to preschool at 3 1/2 and within a few weeks could write her first name.

She's 4 now and can write her full name (first, middle and last) from memory.  She cracks me up.  She also knows how to spell and write her siblings names.  She's always asking me to spell things for her so she can write them out.

  • She learned right after she turned 3 once she started school. I tried teaching her but every time she'd tell me "mom, you're not a teacher". She came home that first day with a piece of paper that she'd written her name on. So Proud!

  • My son is still in the "scribbling" stage. Hopefully that will change soon, since he's started "preschool", but right now, he's just not that interested.

    He's right around 3.5

Oh, no, I deleted my original answer. I lost 5 points or whatever. Oh, boo-hoo.
