How do we socialize our dog?

Our dog is a rescue, and we were told he's dog aggressive. He's never gone after another dog on our walks, but he does get that "alpha stance" and stare and sometimes bark at them. We direct his attention to our walk and continue. We don't allow him to keep that stance and to bark. But eventually we'd like to add another dog to our family, but need to socialize him first so he's not aggressive. How do we do this?

  • I had a very aggressive male dog, and he tried to kill all large adult dogs he came in contact with. Oddly, he loved puppies and little dogs like poodles, and would get really happy to be around them.

We never could socialize him. Taking him for walks where other large dogs were around was just terrible.

Luckily, he was great with the kids and our cat.

  • Puppy's :) They seem to open up older more aggressive dogs .

  • Dog parks are a great opportunity for socializing. If you can afford to, there are all kinds of dog camps and day cares out there now. Even just dropping your dog off to be groomed provides some socialization.

  • A submissive female dog would probably be OK. A lot of dogs are only "leash aggressive" and are totally fine once the leash comes off.
