I defrosted chicken breasts and have a question

They are whole breasts that the butcher put in one layer, so I had to defrost all of them. Should I cook them all and then refreeze cooked extra, or should I refreeze raw again, and is it ok to refreeze it, or will it taste bad defrosted twice over,,,thank you

  • If it were me, I would cook them and freeze them. My mom always said, if you thaw it (especially chicken), not to refreeze it. She also said not to rewarm any kind of food more than once after cooking it. No special laws or rules that I know of from any special authority other than my mom. :0)

  • Personally I would cook them all, use what you inintially wanted to make, make something else and then freeze the left overs.
    chicken salad sandwich
    Chicken caesar salad
    Chicken fajittas
    Chicken burrittos
Cubed chicken, cheese, veggies and crackers

  • I'd cook it all, then just refreeze the cooked extra. It can get nasty if you try to refreeze.

  • You never refreeze thawed meat, it could make you very sick. So cook it and THEN freeze it.

  • can you break off the amount you need without actually thawing them all out? I think that would be the best way.

or else freezing the cooked, definately not refreezing raw after already being defrosted.

  • I would cook them and then freeze them. I always heard not to re-freeze meat as the bacteria remains from the first thaw.

  • You have to completely bring the chicken to a safe temperature (cook) before refreezing. Otherwise nasty germs can grow.
