How long do you keep food before you throw it away?

I have a pretty strict system... Leftovers from a restaurant must be eaten the next day or tossed, fish one day, chicken or beef two, plain pasta three days.

  • Leftovers 3 days. But things rarely last that long around here.

  • Seems like we both treat our food the same. I am much more fussy about food than my husband, sometimes he thinks I throw out perfectly good food but I prefer to be safe than sorry!!

  • That sounds about group won't touch leftovers! So dang frustrating. Thank goodness we have a big dog that will eat anything! lol

  • Oh, wow. That IS a system. I keep it until I think of it as too sketchy to eat. Example: I just threw away leftover spaghetti from Tuesday. It smelled and looked fine, but I was a little weirded out by it.

That's about it as far as my "system", lol.

  • Depends on what it is. Left overs or restaurant take home......3 or 4 days. However, we do use milk and yogurt even if they are over the date a little. As long as they smell and look ok. The dates on items from the grocery store do not really mean that's when the item is going to be "bad" or unsafe to eat.

  • restaurant food, if it's not eaten within 24 hours its thrown out. Veggies, I will use for 2-3 days. meats, eaten within 2 days or thrown out. Fish, I don't save the leftovers because I don't think it tastes good reheated.
