  • I think the purpose of discipline is to teach - so that's my goal with all my discipline and I use several techniques. I reward good behavior. I complement my kids when they do something right - not general complements, but specific things. I try to do that at least once a day. I give alternatives for bad behavior. So when they feel angry or frustrated they can draw a mad picture, yell or punch a pillow, write down how they feel, or other things instead of hitting and yelling. I ignore whinning - my kids know if you start whinning the answer will stay no. But I do teach them to negotiate, that if they can come up with good reasons and present their case in a calm manner, it's possible I'll change my mind (but not always). I use time outs - for older children that might include writing down why what they did was wrong. I take away pridledges (no screen time, grounding, reduced allowance) when necessary.

  • I used an authoritative parenting style with my children and now my grandson. Psychologists know this is the most effective parenting style. I had to learn how to parent from books, conferences, workshops, parenting groups, ect. because all I had seen was authoritarian parenting. My oldest son was born in 1979 and the book that shaped my parenting was Without Spanking or Spoiling by Elizabeth Crary. She has written many books and has a web site called star parenting. Her book Love & Limits is a great first parenting book.

  • I usually use time outs or taking toys and privledges away (oh and for my 10 and 6 yo I also make them write sentences)... If it is something huge that could bring harm to themselves or someone else I will spank...

  • My son is ten, with him I usually use grounding him from something (the Wii and Computer are very effective!) or sending him to his room!
