I REALLY need Ms. Pelosi's latest statement explained to me....

Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.

What?

"It injects demand into the economy," Pelosi said, arguing that when families have money to spend it keeps the economy churning. "It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name."

Pelosi said the aid has the "double benefit" of helping those who lost their jobs and acting as a "job creator" on the side.

"It's impossible to think of a situation where we would have a country that would say we're not going to have unemployment benefits," Pelosi said.

This make any sense to anyone else?

  • Pelosi speak translation:
The money we give people is spent on stuff. We hope you believe that when they pay their electric bill and buy groceries, they are creating jobs. We hope you don't notice that when they stop going bowling and getting their hair done or drinking lattes, more people lose their jobs due to the lack of demand. We also hope you don't realize that unemployment is usually far less than their real income, so chances are they are defaulting on their basic expenses, costing even more jobs. Please pass our bill so people will like us and vote for us.

  • The sad thing about her statement is that there are people ignorant enough to believe her.

  • oh. my. heavens.

No, this makes absolutely no sense at all. The woman obviously has a severe case of botox overload, or something. There are no words for this, except -- she is delusional -- that is all I can come up with.

  • And btw, if unemployment really was creating "more job growth" than anything else they've been trying for over a year, WHY are they so reluctant to use money that was earmarked for "job creation" to pay for it?

  • "Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, "

Wow, think about this. If unemployment hit 15%, think about ALL THE JOBS THAT WOULD BE CREATED! We just need MORE UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE to jump start the economy! WOOHOO! Crisis solved!

  • Gee, wouldn't JOBS do a better job of creating jobs? Unemployment covers virtually nothing. It maybe keeps you fed, if your spouse is still working. But your car gets repossessed, your house foreclosed, and pretty soon your credit cards are maxed and bankruptcy is looking pretty good.

Unemployment does not stimulate the economy. Maybe she should lose her job, collect unemployment for a while, and then she could tell us about how well unemployment works to create jobs.

  • It doesn't make any sense. If someone lost their job and then gets unemployment, they still have less money to spend. I've never heard of unemployment paying out more in benefits that someone was previously earning. More jobs would only be created if people had more disposable income.

  • This is as asinine as saying crime creates jobs.  When crime goes up, people buy guns, install security systems, and vote to hire more police.  So crime is good then, right?  *shaking head*
