Why do you think an almost 3 year old that's been consistently sleeping through the night for 2 1/2 years would start getting up at night?

By 4 months my son was consistently sleeping through the night, and until the past week he only woke up a few times when he was really sick. In the past week he has been up in the middle of the night 3 times. I can't come up with any reason why he is suddenly doing this, but I'm afraid it will become a habit if we don't stop it soon. Any ideas what might be causing this or suggestions for getting it to stop?

  • Teething, growth spurts, or being over-tired makes them restless in the night. Do they still nap? Maybe over-tired. But probably molars. Tylenol or Motrin will relieve the pain & swelling and they'll rest better.

  • Is he getting molars? Sometimes teething can cause them to wake up in the middle of the night.

  • It's a faze that most pre-school parents complain about. It's normal. It might help if he gets lots of exercise and stimulation after nap time. Their brains are really busy at this age.

  • Sounds like teeth, or ears....this age though they start hearing the things that go bump in the middle of the night too...

  • I haven't really recognized any signs of teething, but I'll look into that. Come to think of it though, he and his twin sister have both been more cranky than usual for the last two weeks, so maybe that is what is going on with both of them.

  • He is getting lots of excercize in the evenings. The little ones ride their tricycles for at least 30 minutes to an hour every night after dinner while the rest of us play basketball. They also have a long recess after nap at daycare. Could we be over-stimulating?
