does anyone else feel the way I do about the term "single mom"?

To me, as single mom is a women who has a child/children who takes care of her child completely by herself. No help from family, and lives alone (with her kids of course).

It just annoys me that all these girls (my cousin for example) will post on their myspace and facebook "hard working single momma" and all that stupid stuff with their glittery graphics when they are like 18 years old, living at home with their parents with a part-time job and all the help they could ask for. Idk why but I'm just weird about this.

I work, go to school and have my own apartment, I take care of my daughter by myself with the exception of when I have to put her in daycare. To me, that's a single mom.

  • I'm not single, but I agree. How hard working can you be with live in grand parents and only working part time?
I know some people who change boyfriends more than underwear and go back and forth calling themselves single mom's to not single mom's.

  • A single mom is a mother who is not married or has the help of a man. She is a single mother but not independently.

  • i agree with you i was 17 single mom working my butt off and doing it by myself. i have a cousin who claims to be a single mom doing everything but lives at home with her mom, doesn't work and leaves the kids with her mom all the time to hang out with her friends. oh and shes in her late 30's. im not a single mom anymore but i still makes me mad

  • I know what you mean. I was single, on my own making $8/hour minus child care but was able to provide (barely) everything she needed without assistance. I had a "friend" that kept popping out kids, never knew who the father was and lived soley off the government-no job!

  • I don't know your cousins, but if they are mothers that are not married, they are single moms, IMHO. Just because someone has support from other family members does not mean they are not hard working or a "single mom".
