Going to my SO family gathering tomorrow. Should I bring a side or not??

My SO whole family are very conservative people and are the type to see each other every other year or something. Well were invited to a party that's about an hour and a half away because my SO cousin is coming from the military and don't know if we should bring a side dish or something?? They told me no but still I feel like maybe I should. They usually have only traditional Japanese dishes at gatherings but at this particular cousin's house she mixed like our family ( Mexican and Japanese) what to do??

  • Cake, white with vanilla frosting, maybe some roses on it. You can't go wrong with dessert!

  • Or a plate of homemade cookies- easy to carry, won't be bothered by the heat, easy to eat.

  • When I'm going to a family gathering with my husband's family I always bring a side dish or a dessert, even though his mom always tells me not to. I just consider it polite - it's how I was brought up. I would never show up without something for the hostess.

  • Hmmm, wouldnt want to bring potato salad to a traditional Japanese meal. Maybe dessert like pps said, or drinks? If worse comes to worst you could pick up wine, or flowers as a hostess gift. I wouldnt go empty handed.

  • If you are driving an hour and a half you are kind of limited on what to take. I would take drinks or stop at a walmart and grab a cheese cake or something. Unless you are taking a cooler, then you could make something. Or just chips and dip. Or, make a granola. My hubby loves the mountain mix granola at walmart, so I make it. Jar of peanuts, jar or cashews, almonds, a jar of raisins, big bag of M&Ms. That is a nice snack kind of thing!!!

  • I would take something. It doesn't have to be fancy but something shows that you appreciate being invited.
