  • Yep and it isn't the largest in the world either like some media will have you to believe. Should the leak be stopped? Absolutely, no one wants tons of oil leaking. But the FACT is the world didn't die after the Gulf War oil spill or the Lakeview Gusher. So it is safe to say the world isn't going to die from this one either!

  • Nates, I put a link up here on this about 30 days ago. It is ignored because it was in Mexican waters. It lasted for 10 months and spilled 36 million gallons of oil. This spill, to date, is just in the "baby stage". Hopefully, it will be kept that way.

  • This is from 1991:

Jan. 23–27, southern Kuwait: during the Persian Gulf War, Iraq deliberately released 240–460 million gallons of crude oil into the Persian Gulf from tankers 10 mi off Kuwait.

I believe that is more oil than has currently leaked from the Deepwater Horizon.

Deepwater Horizon is the worst in US history.   Whether it will be the WORST ever, that is still unknown.

  • 84 million gallons and no end in sight. What does it possibly serve to minimize this spill? This is for sure the TOP oil disaster in the US, woese even than exxon which took 20 years to clean up (and is still not done.)

  • It's not the WORST, according to this:  http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001451.html

  • This one is from 2006 and still leaking:

August 11th, Guimaras island, The Philippines: A tanker carrying 530,000 gallons of oil sinks off the coast of the Philippines, putting the country's fishing and tourism industries at great risk. The ship sinks in deep water, making it virtually unrecoverable, and it continues to emit oil into the ocean as other nations are called in to assist in the massive clean-up effort.

  • No but some of the moms on here don't realize that life existed before they did. You know, like some think Bush was the first president.

  • dang I was trying to get a ticker in there. Heres a link instead. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/horizon-oil-spill.html

I do not find the argument "it's not the only bad spill" compelling.  It is the WORST.  And any spill is a disaster.

  • I'm not minimizing it. It is a ENORMOUS disaster and getting bigger every day.

    However, the world won't end.

  • Well Stacy, I can NOT wait to see your pics of you, your bucket, and dawn pitching in!

I think if you are going to cry about how absolutely terrible it is and how its ending the world then your arse better be out there making a difference. But I will bet you won't put forth the effort.
