How do you tell the difference between a boy and a girl parakeet?

I thought someone told me something about the color of the beak or something like that but all the beaks look the same to me.

  • If it looks the same its because the bird is not mature yet. Males have a blue/purple,and females a pink/tan. Its called the cera, its above the beak.

  • You mean like their "nose?" How old is the bird when it changes to the right color? The bird I have is 2-3 months old.

  • My girl's color didn't change until she was just over a year. My boy's was evident from the time we got him.

  • Then maybe the one I have is a boy. His nose is purpley blue.

  • The first poster is right--the skin above the beak is the way you tell the sex. BTW, if you got your parakeet from a pet store, they almost always sell nothing but males anyway.
