The government created it and fed it to the people. Cheap loans, cheap credit, no-doc, interest-only.... It was unsustainable.
The government is still doing it. Cash for Clunkers and cash for first-time homeowners are good examples. It helps a few people, but cost is enormous, and neither worked/is working to improve the economy. As soon as funding stopped, sales dropped. It only delays the inevitable while costing the American people an enormous amount of money that our grandchildren will be paying back long after we are all dead.
