Can you offer tips on moving and packing?

We are getting ready to move this summer! I would love to hear your tips and tricks for preparing, packing, transitioning the kids... anything you have to offer! We are not moving far and we're doing it all ourselves. :)

  • My grandmother is the master mover. She uses a notebook and lists everything that is in the boxes and puts numbers on them so she knows exactly what is in each box. She even diagrams what part of the moving truck certain boxes are in. One major thing for us is making sure our bedding is easily accessible, as well as change of clothes and toiletries and towels.. because at the end of a long day of moving all you want is a shower, clean clothes, and your bed. Digging around to find all of those things is really stressful.

  • we are moving this week!
    pack and move everything that you DONT need first this way it will be out of your way as you pack and will be at the bottom of the pile at your new place so it wont matter if you get to it last!
    label label lablel!!! get note cards and in big letters put the room it goes to and under that write on it whats inside so you dont have to go through boxes to find things
    if you have things you plan on keeping in boxes for a while buy some plastic totes and put those things in them before you move this way it saves you sorting time for things you are only going to store later.
    if you have a room in your current place you dont use very often try packing it first and stacking it all on one side of the room and slowly pack the rest of your place and put things in there as you pack them this way they are not in your way.

  • Start by packing stuff that you don't use first. I pack up things like bread makers, ice cream makers and my huge kitchen aid mixer first. I also save the kids toys for last. If anything else they can still play while the moving is going.

  • when we moved i did this: everything thing i cleaned out (closets, drawers, under sinks, garage), i went through everything and everything i didn't want or need anymore, i put in a seperate box called "yard sale". that way, when we moved into the new house, it was rid of all the junk. and then i had a garage sale at the new house.... and since i had already went though everything before the move, i already had my yard sale stuff.

    The only thing I like to add is to keep all your TV; VCR; DVD.... etc., remote controls together and close to you so you can use them immediately on hand as your form of entertainment.

  • It's easier to pack like things in each boxes.
    All the kitche supplies in boxes marked "Kitchen".
    All the living room gear in boxes marked "Living room".
    This will greatly help when you move into your new place, because every box will be put in the right room. Then you're not having to search the house for something, because it should already be in the room you need it.
