Rotting pumpkin stems???

DH and I went out to the garden and I was looking at the stem of the pumpkin plant coming up from the dirt, and it was rotting???? I don't know why, but two out of 5 pumpkin plants are doing this, and it seems like there were a couple flies/bugs near or around where it was rotting. The plants were basically dying, but what caused it? This is the first time i've grown pumpkins...so i'm totally clueless. Any suggestions??

  • There's a disease transmitted by squash bugs. I am thinking this could be the problem. The other one is a squash vine borer, but you'd see a hole bored into the vine- and if you cut the vine open, you'd see the borer. If this is correct, then there are chemicals that you can buy to put on the plants, look in your garden store.
