Affordable Housing. Does anybody know anything about Housing Lotteries?

I heard the other day someone commenting about this. She said that she pays much less for her rent since she was selected. How does it work...the housing lotteries?

  • It depends on how your county housing agency handles their housing vouchers. 1,000 people apply for 10 vouchers they have a lottery and pick maybe 20 people. They go through the first 10 to see if they qualify then if 1 doesn't #11 gets a shot at income qualifying. (Some agencies may even do criminal, and credit background checks)
Then I suppose the voucher is for a certain amount of rent and you find a landlord that is willing to take it for the rent amount given. The housing agedncy comes out and does an inspectionto see if it meets guidelines if it does then you (agian usally) pay around 30% of your income.

  • Contact the housing authority in your area. The lottery registration period is going on now in Chicago.
