Should my doctor check me for Dilation?

He said he doesnt start checking till 38 weeks, but the way my appointments fall by that point I will be 38 weeks and 4 days..

so should I ask to have him check me at 37 weeks and 4 days?

  • It will be fine to wait until then..unless you are having some concerns.
The less they mess around down there the better off you are anyway.
Good Luck! Bet your anxious about babies arrival! Congradualtions! Not much longer to go.... :)

  • Being checked at all is actually unnecessary. There is always risk of infection as well.

Best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery!

  • No, extra checking increases the chances for infection. I would wait as long as everything looks good.

  • My OB checks whenever I ask starting around 35 weeks (and I was going twice/week), but it really isn't necessary.

  • I guess in my situation, I want to know because my husband goes to work between 10pm and 8am... so I have this crazy nervous thought my water is going to break, and I can just call him because he is the military in training right now.

  • When the appointments became weekly (around week 35 I think), my doc checked for my dilation each time. It was only twice. On week 38, the doc checked again and it felt funny with strange discharges and that night my water broke.

  • No.
Because you have expectations (that dilation means something), it can mess with your confidence.
