NBC to allow gay couples to apply for tv wedding, Good thing?

After a meeting with gay and lesbian activists on Thursday, NBC's "Today" show said it is changing the rules for its annual wedding contest to allow same-sex couples to apply for a ceremony conducted on morning TV.

NBC extended the deadline for applications until Monday. Already thousands of couples have expressed interest in the on-air wedding, which the top-rated morning show has sponsored for a decade, a spokeswoman said.

"We're thrilled that `Today' show's `Modern Wedding Contest' now recognizes what most fair-minded Americans have already concluded — a wedding celebrates love and commitment, whether the spouses are straight or gay," said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

  • About damn time. :-)
I see no reason not to. I think there is too much going on in this world, too many things we could all be worrying about and trying to fix to waste our time and energy worrying about homosexuals getting married, having kids, being together. Something so harmless, just two people living their life, gets a lot more thought than something needing it like the homeless, hungry, abused. That is not a good thing.

  • living now must be what it felt like when it was illegal for interracial couples to wed, and people were fighting to get it changed.

  • They are being used for ratings and that is wrong. Do not watch NBC any more.

  • That's awesome! Regardless of how individuals feel about gay marriage or homosexuals in general, the point of fact is that Gay Marriage IS happening, and to limit on air marriages simply because they involve homosexuals is discrimination. We would be having a completely different tone here if they had been limiting marriages to "young" couples or "white" couples or any other limited group because it would be seen as the discrimination it is... The only reason we have talking about this at all is because it's somehow okay to discriminate as long as people are gay. Thankfully, people are catching on and the trend is finally being challenged!
