What makes one prophet more legit than another?

I was watching "Mysteries of the Bible: Prophets" and one of the things they mentioned was that the bible stipulates the way to tell the difference between the REAL prophets and the FALSE prophets was that only the predictions of the real ones would come to pass...

BUT, that raised some big questions for me. There are prophets from any number of cultures and paths who's predictions have come to pass, while many of the predictions in the bible people are still waiting for...

So, what makes one more legit than another? When it comes to "prophets" why would someone believe one and not another? And does a prophets predictions coming true legitimize the culture/path/deity they represent or does their predictions not coming to pass discredit the culture/path/deity they represent?

What are your thoughts?

  • Your own beliefs... what you were raised to believe, etc YOU make one more legit than another.

  • He could have prevented it, but it would have interfered with God's plan so He chose not to. It says so in the Bible.

  • Oh and to answer Sabrina's question, all of the prophets in the Bible were inspired by God, so they are all legit.

  • What about other Prophets who weren't in the bible? Or who are from other cultures? How do you know which are "inspired by God" and which aren't? What if someone made a mistake and believed the wrong one?
