Are there any moms here homeschooling their kids with autism?

I'm debating over whether or not to homeschool Matthew. He's 11, going into the 6th grade, but he's really more on a third-grade level. I'm sure he'd progress much faster working one-on-one with someone, but I *don't* know if I'm the best "someone" for him. I'm concerned that if I enter into formal teaching with him, it'll be only a matter of time before one of us commits homicide!

  • I think he needs the social situation at school. I hear ya on the homocide thing! I can't imagine having my autistic son home 24/7! Its bad enough after summer school is done!

  • I understand you, "other Tina"!! If I DID do this, I'd want to associate with a group of other autism moms doing the same thing, for the reason you mentioned. He definitely needs the social stimulation. We do church twice a week, and during the school year, he has twice a month social groups on Saturdays. That helps the socialization.

  • We have 3 children, 2 on the spectrum, we are currently homeschooling and will continue to do so for as long as possible. My guys are a lot younger then yours so I have no idea what HSing with an 11 year old would be like. For us an dour kids special learning needs we though this was the best way to go. We are out in the community several times a week for social activities and are doing our best to juggle it all.
    Good luck in your choice!!
